Not just a Name

This month’s moodboard was inspired by a simple but powerful idea about branding, what it really means, what it represents, and why it matters. Every item featured here is more than just a beautiful object—it’s a representation of decades (sometimes centuries) of thoughtful design, innovation, and cultural significance.

It’s Not Just a Name explores this very idea. It’s a visual celebration of iconic design—pieces whose silhouettes, materials, and presence communicate something far greater than function alone.

This all started with a post shared by Brand Manager Muralidharan Kolenchery. His words hit on something that in my opinion, feels so true in the world of design.

“A $1,000 Bag vs. a $20,000 Bag: What You’re Really Paying For

A recent piece of Chinese propaganda claimed: “Why pay $20,000 for a luxury handbag when you can buy the same one, made in China, for $1,000?”

Chinese factories that produce bags for top European luxury brands are now offering the same bag directly to consumers without the logo, for $1,000. The retail version, with the logo, sells for $20,000.

On the surface, this might seem like a win for cutting out the middleman. But that perspective completely misunderstands the role—and power—of branding.

That $19,000 difference? It’s not just markup. It’s the value of the brand itself.

You’re not just buying a product. You’re buying:

A globally recognized symbol of status and identity

Decades of design heritage, creative vision, and cultural capital

The emotional story of craftsmanship, prestige, and aspiration

Trust, exclusivity, and the power of perceived value

Without the logo, it’s just a bag. With it, it becomes an icon.

The logo represents everything the brand has built over time—narrative, desirability, and a global standard of luxury. And that value doesn’t come from a factory floor. It comes from strategy, storytelling, and emotional connection.

In the luxury world, branding isn’t the “extra.” It’s the essence.”

This sentiment struck a chord. As curators of interiors and design, we know this truth intimately. The value of a piece—whether it’s a sofa, a chair, a pendant light, or a handcrafted rug—extends far beyond the materials or form. It’s about what it stands for. The craftsmanship. The heritage. The creative process. The story behind the object.

In interiors, as in fashion, the value of branded design isn’t superficial. It’s deeply emotional. It’s the comfort of knowing where something comes from.

This is a philosophy that resonates deeply with our collaborators at Form. The brands they proudly represent—Molteni&C, Hastens, Rimadesio, Bonaldo, and Natuzzi—are perfect examples of this. Each one carries a legacy of craftsmanship, design integrity, and innovation that transforms a simple object into something meaningful, enduring, and iconic. Because in great design, it really isn’t just a name. It’s a story. A standard. A symbol of something greater.
