Gozo Project by Sharon Borg Cesareo

Tucked into the serene landscape of Gozo, this newly completed escape apartment was conceived as a sanctuary, a place to unwind, reconnect, and slow down. The design draws from the surrounding Mediterranean palette, focusing on natural textures, minimalism, and purposeful simplicity.

 

The kitchen is a sculptural element in its own right, entirely constructed and clad in the same floor tile that runs throughout the apartment. With open recesses in place of traditional cabinetry and a single floating shelf, the layout supports intuitive, easy living while maintaining a sense of visual calm.

A large oak dining table invites gathering and shared meals. Suspended above it are two imposing raffia pendants, statement pieces that bring scale, texture, and an organic focal point to the heart of the space.

 

A custom-built lounger seamlessly integrated and clad in the same floor tile, is paired with an adjoining built-in desk, offering a multifunctional zone for remote work, rest, and additional sleeping. Layered macramé cushions soften the lines and add warmth and texture.

On the opposite wall, two calming abstract canvases in soft, muted tones subtly reference the nearby Ramla Bay, a quiet creative moment where I picked up my paintbrushes once again and translated the landscape onto canvas.

 

In the bathrooms, the same material palette continues, unified by subtle black accents seen in fixtures, mixers, mirrors, and lighting. One bathroom features a round built walk-in shower with a pebbled floor and hand-carved stone basins. The second includes concealed laundry appliances, hidden behind textile-covered panels to maintain the organic tone and the third a sleek spacious walk in shower.

 

The bedrooms echo the apartment’s quiet elegance, simple, considered, and uncluttered. Open hanging racks replace wardrobes, offering both ease and airiness. Beds are understated, with muted accents and oversized woven baskets that neatly hold extra cushions and blankets.

Soft grey sateen blackouts paired with grey linen sheers dress every window, diffusing the island light beautifully throughout the day. Organic pendant lighting enhances the Mediterranean ambiance, while carefully positioned track lighting allows for subtle mood shifts and highlights curated moments throughout the space.

 

In the hallway, built-in wooden storage blends seamlessly with the rest of the design, another nod to the balance between function and feeling.

This apartment was designed as a retreat, a place where life slows down, and beauty meets ease.
